My first year as President has passed quickly and we have been very active.
Brian Chaperlin has almost single handedly produced two excellent newsletters, the latest a bumper issue of 14 pages. It is a mammoth task and goes out to over 500 members. We have had a good response with emails, letters and phone calls.
Last June we organised The Old Raineian Walk, led by OR and local guide Richard Palmer, who also works at the Ragged School Museum. A very long but enjoyable day taking in all the places of interest to Old Raineians, from Bethnal Green to Wapping. If there is enough interest this year,we hope to walk again.
In October we were approached by the organisers of an
exhibition of samplers stitched in institutions that included several works from Henry Raine's Asylum, circa 1841-48. They had seen photo's of memorabilia on display at the Ragged School reunion
on our website and bought a 'History of Henry Raine's Schools' book to help with the research for their catalogue. Brian and I were invited and attended the opening reception which was very interesting. Many thanks to Carl Bridgeman for reprinting the book.
The winter Reunion in November was a big success, good turnout and good venue at the Civil Service Club. Many letters of thanks and congratulations were received.
Last week, the committee had the honour of being included in the Founder's Day service at St George's in the East. A lovely service by the school chaplain and the students, some in costume, were a credit to the new Head, Mr Gordon Clubb, as they laid the wreath on the tomb of Henry Raine with respect.
Finally, thanks must go to Mr Clubb for his generous hospitality in allowing us the use of his office for the ORA AGM. He hopes to involve the ORA in other events which will strengthen the link between the past and present.
We are pleased to welcome Eddy Dodwell and the Committee now consists of :
President Claire Burrows
President-Elect Roy Smith
Hon Treasurer Clive Baugh
Secretary Frances Dolman
Membership Sec/Editor Brian Chaperlin
Webmaster Eddy Dodwell
Executive members Tony Groves
Sandra Johnson
Gwynneth Jackson

The Committee is stronger now than it has been of late and we look forward to another productive and interesting year.

Claire Burrows. 11th May 2007
